When UPSC Announces Recruitment
The Civil Services notice usually comes out in January or February, with the preliminary exam around late May or June. NDA and CDS are held twice a year. Exact dates for every exam are fixed in the UPSC annual calendar, released for the following year well in advance.
What UPSC Applicants Often Miss
- Sitting even one paper of the Civil Services preliminary exam counts as an attempt, and attempts are capped by category.
- The optional subject and the medium for the main exam are chosen in the application form. Plan these before you submit, because UPSC does not allow later changes.
- Service and cadre preferences given in the detailed application form decide your allocation. Rank only services you would actually join.
- NDA, CDS and CAPF candidates must also meet the physical and medical standards of the service, which UPSC does not relax.
Preparing for UPSC Recruitment
Commission exams reward depth. Start with the official syllabus and the last few years' question papers, which UPSC usually publishes on its website. For a state commission, give real time to the state's history, geography, economy and current schemes, which ordinary general studies books cover thinly.
If the exam has a descriptive main stage, practise writing answers to a word limit and a time limit well before the preliminary result. Interviews test clarity and awareness more than memorised facts.
Eligibility for UPSC Jobs
Each UPSC notification sets the qualification and age limits for its posts. Central government recruitment explains the standard age relaxations and the mistakes that get applications rejected.
Pay and Benefits at UPSC
Posts filled through UPSC are paid by the department that makes the appointment, on the pay matrix of the government concerned. Officer posts usually start high on the matrix, and every notice states the pay level or scale of each post.
Selected candidates serve a probation period, often two years for officer posts, and get the usual government benefits: dearness allowance, house rent allowance, leave, medical cover and a pension scheme.
