About Results

Reading a Government Exam Result

Results are published in one of three forms: a PDF list of qualified roll numbers, a merit list with names and ranks, or a scorecard you log in to see. Lists are often split by category and post. Use the search feature in your PDF reader (Ctrl + F) to find your roll number quickly.

Many results come with cut-off marks by category. They tell you how close you were and help you plan the next attempt. Some recruiting bodies also release individual marks a few days or weeks after the result.

Terms You Will See in Results

  • Qualified or shortlisted: you move on to the next stage. It is not yet a final selection.
  • Cut-off: the lowest marks with which candidates in a category qualified.
  • Normalised marks: adjusted marks used when an exam is held in several shifts, so that easier and harder shifts are fairly compared.
  • Reserve or waiting list: candidates who may be offered posts if selected candidates do not join.
  • Final result or final selection list: the list of candidates recommended for appointment after all stages.

What Usually Comes Next

A result is often only one stage. Qualified candidates usually move on to a main exam, skill test, physical test, interview or document verification. Each has its own dates, so keep checking the official website and this page.

After the final result, selected candidates receive an offer of appointment, usually after document and character verification and a medical examination. This can take some weeks or months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my marks different from my answer-key estimate?

Differences usually come from normalisation across shifts, questions dropped after the final answer key, or errors in self-calculation. The official scorecard is the authoritative figure.

Can I ask for re-evaluation?

For computer-based objective exams, re-evaluation is generally not offered, as the answer key objection stage serves that purpose. For descriptive papers, some bodies allow you to apply for re-totalling. The result notice says whether this is available.
