About Syllabus

Using the Official Syllabus

The syllabus and scheme of examination in the notification are what the exam is built on. Coaching notes and third-party summaries can leave out topics or add ones that are not tested. Start with the official syllabus and exam pattern, and plan your preparation around the subjects that carry the most marks.

What to Look for in a Syllabus

  • Number of stages, and which of them are qualifying only and which count towards the final merit.
  • Marks and time for each section, and whether sections are timed separately.
  • Negative marking, and the language in which papers are set.
  • Topics specific to the post or the state, which general study material often misses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the syllabus change between years?

Sometimes. Recruiting bodies revise schemes and syllabi from time to time, so always use the version in the current notification rather than an old one.
