What Central Government Jobs Are

Central government jobs are posts in Union ministries, departments, attached offices, commissions and central forces. Because they are open to candidates from every state, they are often the first choice for people who do not want to depend on one state's recruitment calendar.

Most central recruitment runs through a handful of bodies. UPSC handles Group A and senior Group B posts. The Staff Selection Commission handles Group B and C posts through exams such as CGL, CHSL, MTS and GD Constable. The Railway Recruitment Boards handle railway posts. Central institutions like AIIMS, ISRO and DRDO run their own recruitment.

How Central Posts Are Grouped

  • Group A: gazetted officer posts, mostly filled through UPSC. Entry is at Level 10 of the pay matrix or above.
  • Group B: gazetted and non-gazetted posts such as section officers, inspectors and assistant section officers, filled through UPSC, SSC and departmental exams.
  • Group C: the largest group, including clerks, assistants, constables, technicians and multi-tasking staff, mostly filled through SSC and the railways.

Pay in Central Government Jobs

Central posts are paid on the pay matrix of the 7th Central Pay Commission. Each notification states the pay level, and every level has a fixed entry basic pay. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance by city class, and transport allowance are added on top.

New central employees join the National Pension System, under which a share of pay is contributed towards a pension along with a government contribution. The rules for your post are explained in the appointment letter.

Preparing for Central Exams

Most central exams below the civil services share the same core subjects: reasoning, quantitative aptitude, English and general awareness. If you prepare well for one SSC exam, you are partly prepared for the others and for railway exams too.

Keep an eye on the annual exam calendars that SSC and UPSC publish. They let you plan months ahead, although dates sometimes move.

Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment

Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.

CategoryRelaxation in upper age limit
SC / ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST)
Ex-servicemenMilitary service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts
EWSNo age relaxation

Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.

Career Growth in Central Government Jobs

Central government careers move through promotion and departmental exams. A typical path for someone who joins through SSC CGL as an assistant section officer is section officer, under secretary and beyond. Pay rises each year through annual increments, and the Modified Assured Career Progression scheme gives financial upgrades at 10, 20 and 30 years of service if no promotion comes through in time.

Posting and Transfer

Many central posts carry an all-India transfer liability, which means you can be posted outside your home state. Some exams, such as SSC GD Constable and parts of the railway recruitment, allocate vacancies by region or zone. Read how posts are allocated before choosing your preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions
