How PSU Recruitment Works
Public sector undertakings are companies owned by the central or a state government. They recruit on their own, with their own pay scales, which are often the industrial dearness allowance (IDA) scales for executives. Engineer trainees are often shortlisted through GATE, while other posts use the company's own written test.
PSUs also hire large numbers of apprentices and non-executive staff such as technicians and operators.
Types of PSU Recruitment
- Graduate and executive trainees: engineering and management graduates, often shortlisted through GATE, CLAT or the company's own test.
- Non-executive posts: technicians, operators, assistants and junior engineers, through the company's written test and trade test.
- Apprentices: graduate, diploma and trade apprentices for one year under the Apprentices Act.
- Experienced professionals: managers and specialists recruited directly at higher grades.

Maharatna, Navratna and Miniratna Companies
The central government groups its larger public sector companies into Maharatna, Navratna and Miniratna categories, based on size, profits and performance. The status gives a company more freedom to invest and take decisions without needing government approval each time.
For job seekers, the label is a rough guide to a company's scale. Maharatna companies such as NTPC, ONGC, Indian Oil, SAIL, Coal India, GAIL, BHEL and POWERGRID tend to hire in larger numbers and more regularly. Smaller PSUs recruit less often but can offer quicker responsibility.
How PSU Pay Works
Most central PSU executives are paid on industrial dearness allowance (IDA) pay scales, which are revised through pay revision committees rather than central pay commissions. Dearness allowance on IDA scales is revised every quarter. On top of basic pay and dearness allowance, PSUs pay a set of allowances as a percentage of basic pay, along with performance-related pay that depends on the company's results.
Each notice states the pay scale of the post, for example the E1 or E2 grade for trainees once they are absorbed. Compare the scale and the company's location rather than a quoted total package, which can include items that vary year to year.
Preparing for PSU Recruitment
For engineering trainee posts, your GATE score is often the only written test, so the group discussion and interview decide the final result. Read up on the company: what it makes, where its plants are, and its recent projects.
Watch for service agreement bonds. Several PSUs ask trainees to sign a bond to serve for a minimum period, with a set amount payable if they leave early.
Career Growth in Psu Jobs
PSU executives join at a trainee grade and move up the executive grades through annual performance reviews, with many reaching general manager and director levels over a career. Non-executive staff have their own promotion ladder, and can move to the executive cadre through internal selection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are PSU jobs government jobs?
PSU employees work for government-owned companies, not government departments. They follow the company's service rules, but PSU jobs are widely counted as government jobs.
What are Maharatna and Navratna PSUs?
These are categories the central government gives to its large public sector companies, based on size and performance. They give the company more financial freedom. For job seekers, they are a rough sign of a company's size and stability.
