How Police Recruitment Works
Each state recruits its own police through a police recruitment board or the state staff selection body. The Staff Selection Commission recruits for the central armed police forces, such as the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and Assam Rifles, and for Delhi Police. The CAPFs also run their own recruitment for sports quota, technical and other posts.

Stages of Police Recruitment
- Written or computer-based test of general knowledge, reasoning, maths and language.
- Physical standards test: height, chest for men, and weight where applicable.
- Physical efficiency test: a timed run, and sometimes long jump, high jump or shot put.
- Medical examination and document verification.
In some states the physical test comes before the written test. The notification gives the order and the exact standards.
Career Growth in Police Jobs
Constables move up to head constable, assistant sub-inspector and sub-inspector through seniority and departmental courses. Sub-inspectors directly recruited can rise to inspector and deputy superintendent. In the central armed police forces the path is similar, with frequent postings in border and difficult areas.
Preparing for the Physical Test
Physical standards cover height and chest, and physical efficiency covers running and sometimes long or high jump. Standards differ for men and women and sometimes by region or community. Start physical training early. Many candidates who clear the written exam are eliminated in the physical round.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who recruits for the CRPF, BSF and other central forces?
Constable (GD) posts in the central armed police forces are recruited through the SSC GD Constable exam. Officers come through the UPSC CAPF exam. The forces also run their own recruitment for some posts, such as sports quota and technical trades.
Are there relaxations in height for police recruitment?
Yes. Height and chest standards are often relaxed for candidates from hill areas, the North East and certain tribal communities. The notification lists the relaxed standards.
