How Railway Recruitment Works

Indian Railways fills most posts through centralised employment notices (CENs) issued jointly by the Railway Recruitment Boards. You apply once and choose an RRB, and your vacancy allocation depends on that choice. Level 1 posts and apprentice positions are recruited by Railway Recruitment Cells in each zone.

Railway PSUs such as IRCTC, RITES, IRCON and RailTel recruit separately through their own notices.

Stages of a Railway Recruitment

  1. First-stage computer-based test (CBT 1), used for shortlisting.
  2. Second-stage CBT for NTPC, ALP, technician and JE posts, which decides the merit.
  3. Typing skill test for clerical posts, or a computer-based aptitude test for assistant loco pilots and station masters.
  4. Physical efficiency test for Level 1 and RPF posts.
  5. Document verification and medical examination to the medical standard of the post.

Preparing for Railway Exams

Railway CBTs test mathematics, general intelligence and reasoning, general awareness and, for technical posts, general science and the technical subject. General science at Class 10 level is a scoring section that many candidates skip.

Choose your RRB and post preferences carefully. You cannot change them after the window closes, and they decide which vacancies you compete for.

Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment

Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.

CategoryRelaxation in upper age limit
SC / ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST)
Ex-servicemenMilitary service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts
EWSNo age relaxation

Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.

Career Growth in Railway Jobs

Railway careers offer steady progression. Assistant loco pilots become loco pilots, track maintainers move up through grades, and commercial and clerical staff move to senior and supervisory posts. Departmental exams, called general departmental competitive exams, also let serving staff apply for higher posts.

Medical Standards

Railway posts are grouped by medical standard, from A-1 for running staff like loco pilots to C-2 for some office posts. Your eyesight and fitness decide which posts you can actually be appointed to. Check the medical standard of each post before you list your preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply to more than one RRB?

No. For a centralised employment notice, you apply to one RRB only. Multiple applications usually lead to rejection.

What does Level 1 mean in railway jobs?

Level 1 is the entry level of the central pay matrix, with a basic pay of ₹18,000 a month. Railway posts formerly called Group D are now recruited as Level 1 posts.

Is there negative marking in railway exams?

Railway CBTs have usually had negative marking of one third of the marks for each wrong answer. Check the scheme in the current notification.
