How Railway Selection Works
- One or two computer-based tests decide merit.
- Some posts add a qualifying stage: a physical efficiency test for Level 1, a computer-based aptitude test for ALP and Station Master, or a typing test for clerical posts.
- Every post has a medical standard, mainly for eyesight. Check the medical category before you choose posts.
- Document verification and the medical come before appointment.
Choosing a Railway Recruitment Board
Most railway notices are common to all boards, but you apply to one board only and compete for its vacancies. Choose the board whose region you would be happy to work in, since postings follow it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum qualification for a railway job?
Class 10 for Level 1 posts. Many Level 1 notices also accept ITI or a National Apprenticeship Certificate, as each notice states.
Is ITI needed for Assistant Loco Pilot?
Yes, Class 10 with ITI in a listed trade, or a diploma or degree in a listed engineering branch instead.
Do railway exams have negative marking?
The computer-based tests have usually deducted a third of a mark for a wrong answer. The notice confirms it for each recruitment.
