Who Recruits in the States

Every state runs its own recruitment, but the pattern is similar. Gazetted officers usually come through the state public service commission. Group C posts come through a staff selection board or commission. Police, teachers and health staff often have their own recruitment boards, and districts and local bodies hire for local posts.

Union territories without a legislature, such as Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, mostly recruit through the UT administration and its departments.

Rules That Differ from State to State

  • Language: many states expect you to know the official language of the state, and some test it.
  • Residence: reserved seats are usually for residents, and a few states keep some or all posts for them.
  • Common eligibility tests: some states, such as Haryana (CET) and Uttar Pradesh (PET), use a shared test to shortlist candidates for many Group C posts.
  • Certificates: caste and EWS certificates usually have to be in the state's own format.

Preparing for State Exams

State exams cover the same core as central exams, plus two things that are easy to underestimate: state general knowledge and the local language. A paper's state section can be worth a fifth or more of the marks, and language papers are often qualifying, which means a low score ends your candidature regardless of your other marks.

Each state page linked above lists the recruitment that comes up most often there and what to focus on.

Career Growth in State Government Jobs

State careers follow each state's service rules. Clerks move up to assistant and superintendent posts, patwaris to kanungo and naib tehsildar posts in many states, and officers through the state civil service grades. Promotion quotas and departmental exams decide the pace, and several states also offer time-bound financial upgrades.

What the Numbers Mean

The number beside each state is the count of open and upcoming recruitments with posts located there. A nationwide recruitment, such as an SSC or railway exam, is listed under Central Government Jobs rather than under every state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for jobs in another state?

Usually yes for unreserved posts, but reserved-category benefits normally apply only to residents of that state. Some states also require local language knowledge, and a few limit certain posts to residents.

Do state jobs pay less than central jobs?

Not necessarily. Most states have aligned their pay rules with the central pay matrix, though allowances differ. Compare the pay level or scale in each notification rather than general claims.

Should I apply for state or central government jobs?

There is no need to choose. Many candidates prepare for both, because the syllabus overlaps a lot. State jobs usually keep you closer to home, while central jobs can involve postings anywhere in India.

Why does a state show no jobs?

We only list recruitment that has been checked against an official notification. Smaller states and UTs publish fewer notices, so their pages can be empty between recruitment rounds.
