What ITI Holders Can Apply For

An ITI certificate in a recognised trade is the entry ticket to many technical posts in the government. The railways recruit ITI holders as technicians and assistant loco pilots. Public sector companies, defence production units and state power utilities take them as apprentices, technicians and operators.

Apprenticeships are the most common opening. They are paid training positions under the Apprentices Act, usually for one year. They do not lead to a permanent job automatically, but some employers give weightage to trained apprentices in later recruitment.

Pay levels are for central government posts. Basic pay is the starting figure; dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are paid on top, and they change with the city of posting and with dearness allowance revisions. State posts follow their own pay rules, and each notification states the pay of the post.

How to Prepare for ITI Level Exams

Railway technical exams test general maths, reasoning, general science and general awareness, plus your trade in a second stage. Revise your ITI theory with workshop calculations and drawing, because the trade section often decides the merit list.

Assistant loco pilot candidates also take a computer-based aptitude test, and you must clear it in each part. Practise aptitude test formats, which are different from normal reasoning questions.

Age Limits You Will Usually See

  • Railway Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician: an upper limit of about 30 to 33 years in recent notices.
  • Apprenticeships: usually 15 to 24 years, with relaxation for reserved categories.
  • PSU technician and operator posts: often up to 25 to 30 years.

Typical ranges before relaxation. Each notice sets its own limit.

Where an ITI Job Can Lead

Assistant Loco Pilots move up to loco pilot for goods trains and then passenger and mail trains as they gain experience and clear training. Technicians progress to senior technician and can move to junior engineer posts through departmental routes.

A diploma earned later, often through lateral entry into the second year of a polytechnic, opens junior engineer recruitment as well.

Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment

Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.

CategoryRelaxation in upper age limit
SC / ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST)
Ex-servicemenMilitary service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts
EWSNo age relaxation

Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.

Your Trade Matters

Notifications list the trades accepted for each post. Fitter, electrician, welder, machinist, turner, mechanic (diesel or motor vehicle) and COPA are among the most frequently listed. An NCVT or SCVT certificate is normally accepted, but read the notification for which one is required.

Before You Apply for a ITI Level Post

  • The exact trade names accepted for the post. Close or related trades are not always accepted.
  • Whether the apprenticeship is registered on the government apprenticeship portal. Many employers ask you to register there first.
  • Medical standards, which apply to railway running staff such as assistant loco pilots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a government apprenticeship a permanent job?

No. An apprenticeship is a fixed-term training contract with a monthly stipend. Some employers give preference to their own trained apprentices in later regular recruitment, but that is not guaranteed.

Does an NCVT or SCVT certificate matter?

Most central recruitment accepts ITI certificates recognised by NCVT or SCVT. A few notices name one specifically. Read the eligibility section for the exact wording.
