What 10th Pass Candidates Can Apply For
Matriculation is the minimum qualification for a large share of government posts in India. Some of the biggest recruitments of the year are open at this level, including SSC Multi-Tasking Staff, Railway Level 1 posts, constable posts in state police and the central armed police forces, and Gramin Dak Sevak posts in India Post.
Many of these jobs are permanent posts with pay, allowances and pension rules set by the government. Some are short-term schemes, such as the Agnipath scheme in the armed forces, so read the terms of service in each notification.
Major Recruitment Open to 10th Pass Candidates
| Recruitment | Conducted by | Posts | Central pay level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-Tasking Staff and Havaldar | SSC | MTS in central offices, Havaldar in CBIC and CBN | Level 1 |
| GD Constable | SSC | Constables in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, SSF, riflemen in Assam Rifles | Level 3 |
| Level 1 posts (formerly Group D) | Railway Recruitment Boards | Track maintainer, helper, pointsman, assistant | Level 1 |
| Gramin Dak Sevak | India Post | Branch Postmaster, Assistant Branch Postmaster, Dak Sevak | Time-related allowance, not a pay level |
| Agniveer (General Duty) | Indian Army | Soldiers under the Agnipath scheme | Fixed package under the scheme |
| Police constable | State police recruitment boards | Civil and armed police constables | State pay rules |
Pay levels are for central government posts. Basic pay is the starting figure; dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are paid on top, and they change with the city of posting and with dearness allowance revisions. State posts follow their own pay rules, and each notification states the pay of the post.
How to Prepare for 10th Pass Level Exams
Written tests at this level usually have four parts: general awareness, reasoning, basic maths and English or Hindi. The questions are at about Class 10 level, so revisiting school maths and grammar pays off quickly.
Solve previous papers of the exam you are targeting under a timer. Many candidates lose marks to negative marking rather than to difficult questions, so learn when to skip. For constable and Agniveer posts, start running practice early, because the physical test eliminates many candidates who clear the written exam.
Age Limits You Will Usually See
- SSC Multi-Tasking Staff: 18 to 25 years for most posts, up to 27 for some.
- SSC GD Constable: 18 to 23 years.
- India Post Gramin Dak Sevak: 18 to 40 years.
- State police constable: commonly 18 to the early or mid twenties, with state-specific relaxations.
These are typical ranges from recent notices, before relaxation. The notice for each recruitment is the only reliable figure.
Where a 10th Level Job Can Lead
Entry posts at this level are not dead ends. Multi-Tasking Staff in central offices can move up to clerical posts through promotion quotas and departmental exams. Constables rise to head constable and assistant sub-inspector with service and departmental courses. Gramin Dak Sevaks can sit departmental exams for postman and MTS posts.
Many people also keep studying after joining and then apply for higher posts through open recruitment, since serving employees often get age relaxation in departmental and some open exams.
Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment
Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.
| Category | Relaxation in upper age limit |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| OBC (non-creamy layer) | 3 years |
| Persons with benchmark disabilities | 10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST) |
| Ex-servicemen | Military service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts |
| EWS | No age relaxation |
Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.
How Selection Usually Works
Most 10th level recruitment begins with a computer-based or written test of general awareness, reasoning, basic maths and language. Uniformed posts add a physical standards test and an endurance test. India Post Gramin Dak Sevak posts are different: selection is usually based on a merit list built from 10th class marks, without a written test.
Before You Apply for a 10th Pass Level Post
- Whether the notice asks only for 10th pass or for 10th pass plus something else, such as an ITI certificate or a driving licence.
- The date by which you must have passed. Results declared after the cut-off date usually do not count.
- Physical standards for police and defence posts, including height, chest and running time. They differ by gender and sometimes by region.
- Local language requirements in state notices. Some posts need the state language as a school subject.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a 10th pass job if I have a higher qualification?
Usually yes. The 10th class is the minimum, and most notices accept higher qualifications. A few posts, mainly some Group D roles in certain states, set an upper limit on education. The notification will say so if it does.
Are 10th pass government jobs permanent?
Many are permanent posts, such as SSC MTS, Railway Level 1 and police constable. Others, like Gramin Dak Sevak or posts under contract schemes, have different terms. The notification describes the nature of the appointment.
What is the starting pay for SSC MTS?
SSC MTS is a Level 1 post in the central pay matrix, with an entry basic pay of ₹18,000 a month. Allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance are added on top, depending on the city of posting.
Is there a written exam for India Post GDS?
Usually not. Gramin Dak Sevak selection is generally based on a merit list prepared from Class 10 marks, followed by document verification. Check the current notification for the exact method.
