What Diploma Holders Can Apply For

A three-year polytechnic diploma in engineering is the standard qualification for Junior Engineer posts across central and state governments. The SSC Junior Engineer exam recruits for central departments. The railways hire junior engineers and technicians. State public works, irrigation, power and water departments hire for their own engineering cadres.

Diploma holders are also hired as technical assistants, draughtsmen and supervisors, and as diploma apprentices in public sector companies.

Pay levels are for central government posts. Basic pay is the starting figure; dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are paid on top, and they change with the city of posting and with dearness allowance revisions. State posts follow their own pay rules, and each notification states the pay of the post.

How to Prepare for Diploma Level Exams

JE exams have a general section and a large technical section on your branch. Standard diploma textbooks and previous papers cover most of the technical part. Practise numericals, since they carry the most marks and take the most time.

Paper 2 of SSC JE is descriptive or conventional in some years and objective in others. Check the current scheme of examination before you plan.

Age Limits You Will Usually See

  • SSC Junior Engineer: up to 30 or 32 years, depending on the department.
  • Railway Junior Engineer: an upper limit in the mid thirties in recent notices.
  • State junior engineer posts: set by each state, often higher than central limits.

Typical ranges before relaxation. Always check the current notice.

Where a Diploma Job Can Lead

Junior engineers usually move to assistant engineer and then executive engineer through promotion. Departments often reserve a share of assistant engineer posts for promotion from the junior engineer cadre, and a degree completed while in service can speed this up.

Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment

Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.

CategoryRelaxation in upper age limit
SC / ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST)
Ex-servicemenMilitary service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts
EWSNo age relaxation

Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.

Choosing Posts by Discipline

Civil, mechanical and electrical are the disciplines with the most vacancies. Electronics, computer science and instrumentation appear less often but regularly. In most notices, a degree in the same branch is accepted in place of the diploma. Check the notice, as a few posts accept only one.

Before You Apply for a Diploma Level Post

  • Branch names accepted for the post, and whether allied branches count.
  • Whether a degree in engineering is accepted in place of the diploma.
  • Experience requirements, which some state and PSU posts add.
