What Graduates Can Apply For

A bachelor's degree in any subject opens the widest range of government jobs. Graduates can sit the UPSC Civil Services and state civil services exams, and the SSC Combined Graduate Level exam for inspector and assistant posts. They can also apply for bank PO and clerk exams, graduate-level railway posts, and police sub-inspector posts.

Some posts need a degree in a particular subject. Examples are statistics for statistical investigator posts, commerce for some accounts posts, or a law degree for legal posts. Others accept any discipline.

Pay levels are for central government posts. State posts follow their own pay rules, and each notification states the pay of the post.

How to Prepare for Graduate Level Exams

Graduate-level exams share a common core: quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English and general awareness. Bank exams add computer knowledge and a heavier focus on data interpretation, while UPSC and state civil services move into descriptive general studies and an optional subject.

Choose one main target, prepare for it properly, and use the overlap to apply for others. Following one good daily source of current affairs from the start saves weeks of cramming later.

Age Limits You Will Usually See

  • UPSC Civil Services: 21 to 32 years, with a limit on the number of attempts.
  • SSC CGL: 18 to 27, 30 or 32 years, depending on the post.
  • Bank PO: commonly 20 to 30 years.
  • SSC CPO Sub-Inspector: 20 to 25 years.

Typical ranges before relaxation. The notice for each exam has the exact limits and cut-off date.

Where a Graduate-Level Job Can Lead

An Assistant Section Officer in the Central Secretariat moves to Section Officer and then Under Secretary over the years. Inspectors in income tax, central excise and GST move up to superintendent and beyond. A bank probationary officer moves through the officer scales to branch manager and senior management.

Many graduates also use a first government job as a base while preparing for the civil services, since a regular income and job security make a long preparation easier.

Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment

Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.

CategoryRelaxation in upper age limit
SC / ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST)
Ex-servicemenMilitary service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts
EWSNo age relaxation

Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.

Final-Year Students

Several large exams, including UPSC Civil Services and SSC CGL, let final-year students apply. You then have to prove you passed by a stated date. If you are in your final year, read the eligibility section closely. Missing that proof date usually ends your candidature even if you clear the exam.

Before You Apply for a Graduate Level Post

  • Whether the post accepts any degree or asks for specific subjects.
  • Minimum marks, which some bank and PSU notifications set.
  • Number of attempts allowed, which UPSC and some state services limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a distance or open university degree count?

Degrees from universities recognised by the UGC, including open and distance learning degrees from recognised institutions, are generally accepted for government jobs. Check that the programme was approved for the year you studied.

Which graduate exams have the most vacancies?

SSC CGL, the bank clerk and PO exams, and the railway graduate-level exam usually have the largest numbers nationally. State civil services and staff selection board exams can also be large.

What is the starting pay of an SSC CGL post?

CGL posts range from Level 4 to Level 8 of the central pay matrix, so entry basic pay ranges from ₹25,500 to ₹47,600 a month depending on the post, plus allowances.

How many attempts are allowed in the UPSC Civil Services Examination?

The number of attempts depends on your category, as set in the rules for each year's examination. The notification lists the attempts and age limits for every category.
