How to Prepare for Medical Level Exams
Medical officer exams are built on the MBBS syllabus, with clinical subjects carrying most of the marks. Nursing officer exams test nursing subjects along with general aptitude. Previous papers are especially useful here, because question styles repeat.
Keep your council registration, internship completion certificate and experience letters ready. Health recruitment often moves quickly from result to joining.
Age Limits You Will Usually See
- UPSC Combined Medical Services: up to 32 years.
- AIIMS NORCET nursing officer: 18 to 30 years.
- State medical officer posts: set by each state, often higher.
Typical ranges before relaxation. Always check the current notice.
Where a Health Job Can Lead
Medical officers move to senior medical officer and chief medical officer grades, and many complete a postgraduate degree while in service to move into specialist posts. Nursing officers progress to senior nursing officer and nursing superintendent posts. Allied health staff move to senior technician and supervisor posts.
Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment
Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.
| Category | Relaxation in upper age limit |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| OBC (non-creamy layer) | 3 years |
| Persons with benchmark disabilities | 10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST) |
| Ex-servicemen | Military service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts |
| EWS | No age relaxation |
Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.
Before You Apply for a Medical Level Post
- Registration with the medical, nursing or pharmacy council named in the notification. Some posts need state council registration.
- Whether internship must be completed by the closing date.
