What Engineering Graduates Can Apply For
Engineering graduates are recruited as trainees and officers by public sector companies, many of which shortlist using GATE scores. The UPSC Engineering Services exam fills Group A engineering posts in the railways, telecom, central public works and other services. ISRO and DRDO recruit scientists and engineers through their own exams.
State public service commissions recruit assistant engineers for public works, irrigation, power and water departments.
Major Routes for Engineering Graduates
| Route | Conducted by | Posts | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Services Examination (ESE) | UPSC | Group A engineers in railways, CPWD, telecom and other services | Level 10 at entry |
| GATE-based recruitment | PSUs such as NTPC, IOCL, BHEL, POWERGRID | Graduate engineer trainees and executive trainees | Company scales |
| Scientist/Engineer 'SC' | ISRO | Scientists and engineers in space centres | Level 10 |
| Scientist 'B' | DRDO | Scientists in defence research labs | Level 10 |
| Assistant engineer | State public service commissions | AEs in public works, irrigation, power and water departments | State pay rules |
How to Prepare for B.E. / B.Tech Level Exams
A good GATE score opens several PSU doors at once, so many engineering graduates make GATE their main exam and treat UPSC ESE and state AE exams as additional targets. The technical syllabus overlaps heavily.
Plan for the interview too. PSUs and UPSC interviews ask about your final-year project, core subjects and current developments in your field.
Age Limits You Will Usually See
- UPSC Engineering Services: 21 to 30 years.
- PSU graduate engineer trainees: often up to 26 to 28 years for the general category.
- ISRO and DRDO scientist entries: usually up to 28 to 35 years, depending on the entry.
Typical ranges before relaxation. Each notification sets its own limits.
Where an Engineering Job Can Lead
In government engineering services the usual path is assistant engineer, executive engineer, superintending engineer and chief engineer. In PSUs, trainees join at the first executive grade and move up the executive grades with performance reviews, with many reaching senior management. Research organisations promote scientists through grades based on periodic assessment.
Age Relaxation in Central Recruitment
Central government notices add these relaxations to the upper age limit. States follow their own rules, which are often similar but not the same, so read the relaxation table in each notice.
| Category | Relaxation in upper age limit |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| OBC (non-creamy layer) | 3 years |
| Persons with benchmark disabilities | 10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST) |
| Ex-servicemen | Military service deducted from actual age, plus 3 years, for most Group C posts |
| EWS | No age relaxation |
Application fees are also commonly waived for women, SC, ST, persons with disabilities and ex-servicemen in SSC and UPSC exams, while the railways have refunded part of the fee to candidates who sit the first exam. Each notice states its own fee rules.
Why GATE Matters
Many PSUs do not hold their own written exam for engineers and use GATE scores instead. If you want a PSU job, check which year's GATE score a recruitment accepts, as most accept only the current or previous year. Apply in the PSU's own window, because a GATE score alone is not an application.
Before You Apply for a B.E. / B.Tech Level Post
- The GATE paper accepted for your branch. It is not always the paper with the same name.
- Minimum marks in the degree, often 60 or 65 per cent for PSUs.
- Service bonds, which some PSUs ask trainees to sign.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all PSUs recruit through GATE?
No. Many large PSUs use GATE scores, but others hold their own written exam or interview. The notification states the method, and you always have to apply separately to the PSU.
For how long is a GATE score valid for PSU recruitment?
The GATE score itself is valid for three years, but most PSUs accept only the current year's score for a given recruitment. Each PSU notification names the GATE year it accepts.
