Ways into the Defence Services

Officer entry is mainly through UPSC's NDA and CDS exams, the AFCAT exam for the Air Force, and technical and graduate entries announced by each service. Officer candidates go through an SSB interview and a medical board.

Soldiers, sailors and airmen are now recruited mainly under the Agnipath scheme as Agniveers, for a fixed period of service. Defence establishments also hire civilians for posts like clerk, tradesman, fireman and MTS.

The SSB Interview

Officer candidates who clear the written exam, or who apply through direct entries, attend a five-day Services Selection Board interview. It includes intelligence tests, psychological tests, group tasks and a personal interview. It assesses officer-like qualities rather than book knowledge, so practice and self-awareness matter more than memorising answers.

Career Growth in Defence Jobs

Officers in the armed forces are promoted through ranks on a time scale up to a point, and then by selection boards. Agniveers who are selected for regular service after their term continue in the ranks. Civilian defence employees follow central government promotion rules.

Things to Check Before You Apply

  • Marital status rules, which apply to several officer and Agniveer entries.
  • Physical and medical standards, which differ by service and by entry.
  • Date of birth range, which defence notices state as exact dates rather than an age.
