How Bank Recruitment Works

Most public sector banks recruit probationary officers, clerks and specialist officers through common exams run by IBPS. IBPS also recruits for regional rural banks. The State Bank of India runs its own PO and clerk exams. The Reserve Bank of India and NABARD recruit for their own grades and assistants.

Public sector insurance companies such as LIC, New India Assurance and others run their own exams for assistant and administrative officer posts.

How Bank Selection Works

  1. Preliminary exam with English, reasoning and quantitative aptitude, used for shortlisting.
  2. Main exam with reasoning and computer aptitude, data analysis, general and banking awareness, and English. Officer exams add a descriptive paper.
  3. Interview for officer posts. Clerk posts are usually selected on main exam marks alone.
  4. Language proficiency test, where required, and provisional allotment to a bank.

Preparing for Bank Exams

Bank exams reward speed. The sections are timed separately, so practise full mocks under the same time limits. Data interpretation and puzzles carry heavy weight in mains, and banking awareness, meaning RBI policies, financial terms and recent banking news, can lift your score a lot.

Career Growth in Bank Jobs

In public sector banks, probationary officers start in Junior Management Grade Scale I and move through Scale II and III to senior management through promotion exams and interviews. Clerks can become officers through internal promotion. Transfers are common, especially for officers.

Local Language Test

Clerk and regional rural bank recruitment is usually state-wise, and candidates are expected to know the official language of the state they apply for. A language proficiency test may be held before appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are bank jobs government jobs?

Jobs in public sector banks, the RBI and NABARD are public sector jobs with service rules set by the bank. They are not civil service posts, but they are widely counted as government jobs.

What is the difference between IBPS and SBI exams?

IBPS runs common exams for most public sector banks and regional rural banks. SBI runs its own PO and clerk exams for State Bank of India. The pattern is similar, so the same preparation works for both.
