Patwaris, called lekhpals in Uttar Pradesh and talathis in Maharashtra, keep village land records, record mutations, assist in revenue collection and verify details for certificates and schemes. Village administrative officers in Tamil Nadu do similar work. These are field posts close to people, with steady promotion to revenue inspector and naib tehsildar in many states.

Preparing

Patwari exams put heavy weight on the state's general knowledge, its language, mathematics and basic computer use. Some states add questions on land records and revenue terms. A good state GK book and the state's previous papers are the core materials.

Selection

Recruitment is through the state staff selection board, often after a common eligibility test. Papers focus on general knowledge of the state, mathematics, reasoning, the state language and basic computer knowledge.
