The Role and How to Get There
Assistant professors teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, guide research and take part in academic administration. College posts in many states are recruited by the state public service commission, while universities and central institutes recruit directly.
UGC regulations set the minimum qualifications: a master's degree with at least 55 per cent (with relaxation for reserved categories) and NET, SET or a PhD. Institutes such as IITs set higher bars, usually a PhD with research output.
Who Recruits
| Recruiter | Institutions | Usual process |
|---|---|---|
| State public service commissions | Government colleges | Written screening test and interview |
| Central and state universities | University departments | Shortlisting on academic score, then interview |
| IITs, NITs, IIMs and other institutes | Their own departments | Shortlisting, seminar and interview |
How Shortlisting Works
Universities often shortlist using an academic score based on your degrees, NET or PhD, publications and teaching experience, under UGC regulations. Strong publications in recognised journals and teaching experience improve your chances considerably. State commissions more often use a written screening test.
Career Growth
Promotion follows the UGC Career Advancement Scheme, from assistant professor through associate professor to professor, based on years of service, teaching and research performance.
Age Limit and Applying for Assistant Professor Jobs
There is no single age limit for assistant professor posts: each notification sets the minimum and maximum age for its own posts, the date on which age is counted and the documents to upload. Central government recruitment covers the standard age relaxations, the documents most recruiters ask for and how the online application works; state recruiters set their own relaxations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NET compulsory for assistant professor jobs?
Under UGC rules, NET, SET or a PhD is required for most assistant professor posts. A PhD awarded under the UGC regulations can exempt you from NET.
Is there an age limit for assistant professor posts?
UGC rules do not set an upper age limit for assistant professors, but state commissions and some universities do. The notice for each post states its own rule.
Can I apply with a pending PhD?
Usually you can apply on the strength of NET or SET. A PhD counts only once the degree has been awarded, unless the notice says otherwise.
