The Job and the Skill Test

Stenographers take dictation from officers in shorthand, transcribe it on a computer and manage correspondence. Many become personal assistants to senior officers or judges. The shorthand skill test is the heart of selection: SSC has set 100 words per minute for Grade C and 80 for Grade D in recent notices, with a fixed transcription time.

Building Shorthand Speed

Shorthand speed takes months, not weeks, so start long before the exam. Practise dictation daily at a speed slightly above your target, and transcribe on a computer, since tests require typed transcription within a fixed time. Accuracy matters as much as speed; most tests allow only a small percentage of errors.

Age Limit and Applying for Stenographer Jobs

There is no single age limit for stenographer posts: each notification sets the minimum and maximum age for its own posts, the date on which age is counted and the documents to upload. Central government recruitment covers the standard age relaxations, the documents most recruiters ask for and how the online application works; state recruiters set their own relaxations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the stenography skill test qualifying?

In SSC Stenographer recruitment, the skill test is qualifying and the merit list is based on the computer-based exam. Courts and states may count it differently, as their notices explain.

Pitman is the most widely used for English and Rishi Pranali or similar systems for Hindi. Any system is accepted as long as you meet the required speed.

Do stenographers get promoted?

Yes. Stenographers move up to personal assistant, private secretary and senior private secretary grades over their careers.
