What the Job Involves
Constables are the front line of policing: patrolling, guarding, maintaining order at events, assisting investigations and handling the public at police stations. In the central armed police forces, constables also serve on borders, in internal security duties and at sensitive installations.

| GD Constable (CAPF, SSF, Assam Rifles) | SSC | 10th pass | Level 3 |
| Delhi Police Constable | SSC | 12th pass | Level 3 |

Physical Tests in More Detail
The physical standards test measures height, chest for men (unexpanded and expanded) and sometimes weight. The physical efficiency test is usually a timed run, for example several kilometres for men and a shorter distance for women in a set time, and sometimes long jump and high jump. The exact standards differ between forces and states and are printed in the notification.
Train for the run months in advance, build distance slowly, and practise on the kind of ground you will run on. Most failures happen in the run, not the written test.
What the Job Is Like
Constables work in shifts and are often on duty during festivals, elections and emergencies, when everyone else is off. In the central armed police forces, postings include border areas and conflict zones, with rotation every few years. The job comes with housing or house rent allowance, ration money in some forces, medical cover and a clear promotion path.
Selection and Physical Standards
Selection combines a written exam with a physical standards test (height, chest for men, weight) and a physical efficiency test, usually a timed run and sometimes jumps. A medical examination follows. Standards differ for men and women and are relaxed for some regions and communities.
Start physical training early. Many candidates who pass the written exam fall short in the run.
Pay and Promotion
Constables in the CAPFs and Delhi Police start at Level 3 of the central pay matrix. State police follow state scales. Promotion is to head constable and assistant sub-inspector with service and departmental courses.
Age Limit and Applying for Constable Jobs
There is no single age limit for constable posts: each notification sets the minimum and maximum age for its own posts, the date on which age is counted and the documents to upload. Central government recruitment covers the standard age relaxations, the documents most recruiters ask for and how the online application works; state recruiters set their own relaxations.
