What Teacher Exams Test
- Child development and pedagogy: how children learn and how to teach different learners.
- The subject you will teach, at and above the level of your classes.
- Language ability, usually in Hindi and English or the state language.
- General awareness, reasoning and, in some exams, computer literacy.
Preparing for Teacher Recruitment
Clear CTET or your state TET first, since it is a condition for most school teaching posts. Then prepare for the recruitment exam itself, which usually goes deeper into your subject. Practise pedagogy questions as classroom situations, because exams ask what you would do, not what a term means.
Selection
Teacher recruitment usually involves a written exam on child development and pedagogy, the subject, general awareness and a language, followed in some cases by an interview or teaching demonstration. Many states count the TET score in the final merit.
Age Limit and Applying for Teacher Jobs
There is no single age limit for teacher posts: each notification sets the minimum and maximum age for its own posts, the date on which age is counted and the documents to upload. Central government recruitment covers the standard age relaxations, the documents most recruiters ask for and how the online application works; state recruiters set their own relaxations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CTET enough for state teacher jobs?
Some states accept CTET, while others require their own TET. The state notification lists the tests it accepts.
What is the starting pay of a KVS TGT?
TGT posts in central schools are at Level 7 of the pay matrix, with a basic pay of ₹44,900 a month plus allowances.
Can I become a teacher without B.Ed.?
Primary teacher posts usually accept D.El.Ed. instead of B.Ed. For TGT and PGT posts, a B.Ed. is generally required.
Is the CTET certificate valid for life?
Yes. The CTET qualifying certificate is now valid for life.
Do teachers get transferred?
KVS and NVS teachers can be transferred across India under their transfer policies. State teachers are usually transferred within the state or district.
