How Apprenticeships Work

An apprenticeship is paid on-the-job training, usually for one year, under the Apprentices Act, 1961. You learn in a real workplace and receive a monthly stipend. Trade apprentices register on the government apprenticeship portal, and graduate and diploma apprentices on the NATS portal.

An apprenticeship does not make you a permanent employee, but the certificate is valued, and some employers give weightage to their own trained apprentices in later recruitment.

How to Apply

  1. Register on the right portal for your apprenticeship type and complete your profile.
  2. Apply to the employer's apprenticeship notice on the portal, and on the employer's own site if the notice asks.
  3. Watch for the merit list or test date, then attend document verification with originals.
  4. Join on the given date and complete the training period to receive your certificate.

Age Limit and Applying for Apprentice Jobs

There is no single age limit for apprentice posts: each notification sets the minimum and maximum age for its own posts, the date on which age is counted and the documents to upload. Central government recruitment covers the standard age relaxations, the documents most recruiters ask for and how the online application works; state recruiters set their own relaxations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an exam for apprentice posts?

Many apprenticeships, especially in the railways, select on merit in 10th and ITI marks without an exam. Bank apprenticeships usually include an online test.

How much stipend do apprentices get?

The stipend is set under the Apprentices Act rules and by the employer, and varies by type of apprenticeship. Each notice states the monthly amount.

Can I do a second apprenticeship?

Generally no. Candidates who have already completed an apprenticeship in the same category are usually not eligible again, as the notices state.
